Abstract

Since the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia in late of 2019, it has spread to more than 200 countries and regions around the world as of May 20, 2020,. At the beginning of the epidemic, regarding the naming of the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia and its pathogen, Chinese doctors and hospitals, official institutions, the public, scholars, and the international organizations such as WHO and ICTV have made great efforts. From initial naming: "unknown pneumonia" to consensus, Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia and its pathogen - Novel Coronavirus were named as COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2. This paper systematically sorts out the naming process and puts forward some opinions on academic debate, political stigma and racial discrimination of virus naming.
